Los Angeles – The Czech film Bratři, directed by Tomáš Mašín, did not make it to the shortlist for nominations for the American Film Academy’s Oscar in the category of best foreign film. The organizers published today a list of 15 images that caught the attention of the academy. Among them are films from, for example, Ukraine, France, Britain, Germany, Armenia or Bhutan. The final nominations will be announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in January.

In the case of the award for the best foreign film this year, members of the academy chose from among films from 88 countries and regions. The German film The Teachers’ Lounge (Sborovna) by Ilker Çatak, the film Zone of Interest by the British director Jonathan Glazer, the Spanish film The Snow Brotherhood, the French historical drama The Art of Eating and Loving or the comedy Karaoke Blues by the Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki made it to the shortlist.

In September, the Czech Film and Television Academy (ČFTA) sent Tomáš Mašín’s film Brothers, which tells the story of the escape of the brothers Josef and Ctirad Mašín from Czechoslovakia during the Cold War, to compete for the Oscar. However, the film did not make it to the shortlist.

Among the fifteen selected films is the film 20 days in Mariupol, which was shot by AP war reporter Mstyslav Chernov in a Ukrainian city besieged by the Russian army. The film has a chance to win the Oscar for best documentary feature as well.

Today, the organizers published short selections in some other categories as well, such as the best animated film or the best short film. The AP is surprised by the fact that the film Barbie is not in the category of best mask and that the film Oppenheimer is not competing for the award for best visual effects.

However, both mentioned films are definitely among the favorites of this year’s Oscars. Organizers will announce the nominations on January 23. Prizes will be awarded on March 10.
