Hunter Herman Obituary, Death – Herman Hunter, aged 83, peacefully departed this life on Sunday, September 2, 2023, in Mason, WV, after a prolonged illness. Born on May 7, 1940, in Boone County, WV, he was the son of the late Ramie Lawrence Hunter and Zelma Baisden Hunter. Herman’s early years saw him as a football standout at Van High School in Van, WV, where he endeared himself to classmates.

Following his time in Van, Herman relocated to South Dakota with his sister and brother-in-law, where he served as a fire tower watchman with the U.S. Forest Service. Returning to Boone County in the early 1960s, he engaged in various jobs as a handyman and assisted his father on the family farm. Joining the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad in 1967 as a track laborer, Herman later transitioned to bridge and building maintenance, contributing significantly to the 1972 Buffalo Creek flood recovery efforts.

Throughout his more than 30 years of service with the railroad, Herman traversed thousands of miles in the southern West Virginia coalfields and worked in the CSX Huntington Shop before retiring in 2002. Herman’s passions included bluegrass music and cooking, and he was renowned for his infectious laugh and unforgettable wit. An adored uncle and family historian, Herman’s absence will be deeply felt by those who cherished his stories and laughter in their daily lives.
